Today we honour the prominent Italian Jesuit saint, Aloysius
Gonzaga. At the age of just seven, Aloysius made a conscious decision that he
wanted to be a saint!
He rejected the decadence of the Italian aristocracy and
took to fasting when others were feasting. After entering the Jesuit novitiate
at the age of 17, Aloysius threw himself into caring for the victims of a
plague in Italy at that time and of other needy souls. Tragically he contracted
the disease himself and died at only 23.
This young man had all the treasures of the world at his
disposal, as a prince and heir, but he gave it all up for the sake of God's
kingdom. HIs message challenges us all to consider what has priority in our
lives. St Aloysius Gonzaga, pray for us! (Source: Archbishop Anthony Fisher's Facebook Page, 21 June 2021)
