Garry Shead Annunciation |
Today across Catholic culture, embracing diverse Christian communities is known as the feast of the Annunciation of the Lord.
This festival which has been celebrated by Christians since the 5th Century marks the Incarnation of the Christ. It is also a celebration in the community of Islam.
The featured art work for this feast is The Annunciation by Australian artist Garry Shead
I discovered this work when it was featured on the cover of Liturgy News, a publication of the Archdiocese of Brisbane in March 2005.
In his commentary on Shead's Annunciation Rev Dr Tom Elich notes that this art "enters into dialogue with the Scripture event and embellishes the melody of the narrative with a kind of counterpoint."
Shead's work is not about Palestine 2000 years ago.It is about us today. In a typical irreverent Australian spirit of the larrikin Shead invites us into the angelic conversation where as Elich suggest we face the questions:
'I wonder what it would be like if it happened to me?What kind of experience is this angelic visitation that I would know the embrace of God in the greeting "Rejoice favoured one". How intimate this intervention of the divine that of my own flesh should begin to grow a child conceived by the Holy Spirit"
