The Temple Police Have Gone Online

Catholicism has a variety of community groups and religious orders that spring up to address the needs of the era. Some of them have a much more sinister agenda such as the "Temple Police"  self appointed guardians of orthodoxy.

In the days before social media they would sit among the Church congregation notebook in hand as well as tape recorder and camera at the ready to record deviations from the liturgical texts and their approved theology. In true Andy Wharhol style they even had their 15 minutes of fame with Richard Stokes in Brisbane.

It now seems that this group is afire with new zeal and new technology in the Facebook era. I joined a Facebook group, Catholics In Australia that describes its purpose to:

Welcome! This group is for all Catholics in Australia to better connect, learn and to encourage one another + * Feel free to promote your local Catholic event or talk. Include the event name, suburb and city, date, time and URL. GUIDELINES 1. Please report any spam or offensive comments to admins and Facebook so we can keep this group friendly and clean. l as requested 2. Help us find the other 5 million+ Australian Catholics by adding your friends to this group
What makes this group interesting is that despite its intended outreach it is a private group that requires members to join. Not nearly as user friendly as the Plenary Council 2020.

So I began to contribute material as requested. To date I have 26 posts awaiting approval from anonymous gatekeeper of faith. For those wondering about the controversial and offensive nature of my posts here they are:

Today Chief Royal Commissioner, Justice Peter McClellan AM, handed the report of the #RoyalCommission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to Governor-General Peter Cosgrove.
Today I returned in pilgrimage to a sacred place in #Brisbane that is home to a memorial statue for those children who suffered and those who did not survive abuse in Church and State childrens’ institutions and homes in #Queensland.
This work is a project I had the privilege of working with in collaboration with #ForgottenAustralians and the artist, Gavan Fenelon . The work shows a young child barefoot and carrying the few meagre possessions provided when it was time to leave institutional living.
May this sacred space remind us of our duty to care for children and surround them with safety, security friendship and the love of a village.
